Botanical Studies, description
by Dr. ssa Anna Zaffaroni
Originally trained as a dentist and surgeon, Arthur Hruska combined scientific expertise with a passion for botany and landscape design. In 1903, he began transforming a 10,000-square-meter vineyard in Gardone Riviera into a botanical masterpiece. Inspired by his global travels, he introduced rare species from the Himalayas, China, and Lapland, and created micro-ecosystems with ponds, streams, and shaded alpine landscapes. Towering palms, camphor trees, bananas, bamboo, and aquatic plants flourished. Known to his children as the “Elephant Cemetery,” the garden became a living expression of Hruska’s unique vision — where science, art, and nature intertwined in perfect harmony.

The name of the species biloba refers instead to the division into two lobes of the fan-shaped leaves, from the Latin bis and lobus with. Darwin defined this tree as a “living fossil” and it is still considered as such since its origins date back to 250 million years ago, in the Paleozoic era.
